July 11th, 2008 kinetic Posted in Baton Rouge community |

600 Main opened in downtown Baton Rouge at the end of this past April and has been adding spice to the night life ever since. A large open space 600 Main has it all. A 38 foot bar affords those looking for a bar feel a place to sit and hang, those looking for more of a lounge feel can relax in the lounge chairs scattered around and those looking to dance can cut the rug out on the dance floor.

600 Main has theme nights from Strictly Salsa to Sexy Saturday & 90’s Night. The club also has a burlesque show, Fleur de Tease, and a fashion show, Fashion on the Main, which appear from time to time. 600 Main has added a flair to the downtown nightlife and is a must for those who like to enjoy the evening scene.

600 Main, the new spot downtown

For many years, Baton Rouge’s downtown has struggled to match the downtown area of other cities. However, the recent infusion of clubs and nightlife has helped spur the boom of downtown development.

This is one of the reasons behind Jeremy and Sara Meighan’s decision to open up their club, 600 Main, located downtown at 600 Main St.

“I think the whole makeup of Baton Rouge depended on the oil industry,” Jeremy said. “Now it is diversified out, and it’s good to be a part of the development.”

The big city feel isn’t new to Jeremy or Sara, but it has become a passion for this husband and wife team.

“Since I’m from south Florida, I have a feel for the downtown area,” Jeremy said. ”I’ve always liked the big city feel. When we had the opportunity to open up a space downtown, we funneled all of our energy into this space.”

Located in the heart of downtown, 600 Main is a new type of club for the Baton Rouge community. What sets it apart from the other downtown establishments is its openness of space and mind.

“It has an open feel to it. You can walk in and make it whatever you want to make it,” Jeremy said. “If you are in a lounge mood, we have some lounge space. If you are into sitting at the bar, we have a huge 38-foot bar.”

The open space is accented with art from their collaboration with local artist Alexander Harvie.

“The synergy we create between his artwork and our building is a great combination. His artwork is always on display,” Jeremy said.

“We keep the club very welcoming. People are looking for something different. As soon as you open the door, you feel welcomed in the space,” he said.

Although 600 Main has only been open for a short period of time (their official opening date was April 24) , they have been extremely successful for two reasons -- customers satisfaction and a great nightly line up.

“When people leave, we get a lot of compliments,” Jeremy said. “Then they come back, but they don’t comeback alone, they come back with a crowd.”

As for their nightly line up, 600 Main’s cornerstone event, Strictly Salsa, has been a staple in the Baton Rouge community for 10 years.

”We already had a very well-established Latin night, which is what my husband, Jeremy, has been doing for the past 10 years in Baton Rouge.” Sara said. “That is one of the reasons we opened up the club. With that already being successful, we brought it to our place and do it on Friday nights.”

Strictly Salsa has had some time to grow as an event, but it is definitely beneficial for it to be in one centralized location.

“It has moved around a bunch. We were at CafĂ© Reggae, Poets, SoGo and Red Star for a little while,” Sara said.

“It’s an experience to see all of the people salsa dancing. We wanted to have a place where the international students and the Latin community could have a place to go out.”

On Saturday nights, 600 Main is host to another successful event called Sexy Saturday.

“Every Saturday is a Sexy Saturday at our place,” Sara said. “We do special events twice a month on Saturday nights.

“We do Fashion on the Main, which is our fashion show, every six weeks or so. We also brought in Fleur de Tease, a burlesque show out of New Orleans.”

“On July 12, we are having a Prince vs. Michael Jackson DJ battle. There will be two DJs, one will play only Michael Jackson and the other only Prince. We will let the crowd choose which DJ is the winner.”

On Thursday nights, 600 Main will try something new.

“Thursdays we will be doing ’90s night, starting on July 3,” Jeremy said. “The ’90s are the new ’80s. We’re excited about our newest night.”

Although there isn’t an assigned theme for Wednesday nights, 600 Main is open for business. In fact, 600 Main is open at 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday for Happy Hour.
